Ill Preparation= State of Emergency in the DMV

I Thank God for this weekend, Not only because My Family and I made it thru safely but because I learned a few valuable lessons.

DC,MD,VA was extremely ILL PREPARED. Once the storm settled and Saturday came, it was like something the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina hit. Personally, I can't see that I saw alot of damage, but from the reports and photos below it's clear it was crazy in some parts.

Gasoline was non-existent at one point , power and traffic lights are out for miles after miles  Hotels are triple booked and four-way stops apparently weren't taught in driving school. It really opened my eyes to my lack of appreciation for the simple things.

This in no way was a tragedy such as Hurricane Katrina, not even comparable. It's just another situation, just like the earthquake in August of 2011 where DMV is unprepared and immediately goes into the panic mode.

Hopefully all my DMV family learned something this weekend and if not able to have electricity, are able to be with someone who does.

Severe weather claims lives in D.C. area

While Friday's storms caused massive property damage for many, for some families it was a source of tragedy.

At least nine people have been confirmed dead as a result of the violent, fast-moving storm that pummeled the greater D.C. area late Friday night,

One of those victims was 26-year-old Khiet Nguyen, who was killed when a falling tree struck his car as he drove alone Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield around 10:30 Friday night.

"The tree fell on top of the car when he was on his way home from school," said his wife, Tuyatmai Dih. ""Detectives come over and told me that my husband passed away, because the tree fell on top of the car."

Not far away, along Carr Place, the storm uprooted trees, slamming them into homes.

Springfield resident Paul Clark explained, "The wind was swirling. It was very windy, trees were shaking."

One tree smashed through the roof of a home, killing a 90-year-old woman who was lying in bed.

Mark Hughes, also of Springfield, added, "This particular area, where two people have lost their lives, and then just go a half mile up the road in another direction - almost no debris."

In Silver Spring, a falling tree killed a 71-year-old woman when it crashed into her second floor bedroom.

And in Northwest D.C., police say a man was electrocuted by downed power lines in a soaked driveway. Investigators say the man came outside after the storm knocked a power line on his Maserati, igniting the vehicle. His wife tried to help him and was shocked, too. The man died from his injuries while his wife is in critical condition.

"We've had terrible, terrible tragic trouble on this street already," neighbor Peter Kovler said.
